Scott Murray,
better known as “The Trout” around the world has become
famous in his own right as a renowned Fishing Guide.
He led one of New Zealand’s most brilliant teams of fishing
guides for over 10 years, and now leads his team at River
Haven Lodge. With over forty years of fishing behind him,
and eighteen of those as a guide for the top of the South
Island of New Zealand, his experience and knowledge are
beyond measure.
|
 |
Scott has fished in Russia and Tasmania,
as well as Colorado, Montana, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Idaho
in the United States, giving him a diverse knowledge of
various fisheries. The Trout has been featured on two ESPN
shows across the USA, cover shot on both Fly Fisherman (Feb.
’04) and Rod & Reel (April ’06) and fished with several
celebrity anglers such as Michael Keaton of Batman and Gary
Anderson, the top scoring goal kicker for NFL in America.
Scotty is experienced in sighting brown trout, as though he
had a type of radar connection with the fish themselves!
Tying his own flies gives you an edge, but tying flies to
match the exact insect stage gives you more of an edge, this
is where Scott comes in.

His 80% return client base speaks
for itself, as his personality, attitude, skills,
patience, and knowledge bring back clients year
after year. He has a unique instinct to read the
fishery, as well as his client’s desires, and
combines them to create a paradise for those that
spend time fishing with him. His fishing skills are
unquestionable, but his uncanny ability to convey
that knowledge to the client and give that person
the edge and confidence to catch the illusive, wily
New Zealand Browns, is where he shines!

Few others know the
back rivers that you helicopter to, like our man
Scott. He tends to guide the helicopter pilot
to those “special places” he has scouted out over
the years to give his clients an unforgettable day
on the river. Some stream beds and banks are rocky
and can be physically demanding, requiring longer
hikes and some manoeuvring over heavy boulders
(especially with heli fishing). There are other
areas that are very easy to walk and offer great
fishing. Be sure to let Scotty know how much walking
you would like to do. His total focus is to provide
you with a positive angling experience.

Your gear, if you have tungsten studded rubber sole
wading boots, bring them, they work fantastically, as
they've outlawed the felt sole boots in New Zealand. Also
remember that you are hunting wild trout in crystal-clear
water and that they are alert to any intrusion. The
reflection off bright-coloured fly line is sufficient to
spook them, so bring your dark lines. And of course don't
forget your waterproof jackets and polarized glasses as
well.
Scotty and his
lovely wife Leya, own property ON the Mangles Riverfront,
and have built “River Haven Lodge” to accommodate those with
the same passion for fishing. Have a look at the website
for the Lodge at
www.riverhaven.co.nz or simply explore the tabs above
for more information about River Haven Lodge. We’ve
recently built a private Bar on the property just steps from
your cabin in the main Lodge for you to enjoy a cold beer or
some of New Zealand’s finest wines.
A bit too tired at
the end of a long day on the river to cook? NO worries,
we’ve added full-service dining with home-style New Zealand
cuisine. Now you have the choice of having your meals in
your cabin or socializing with other Lodge guests, and
sharing your day’s experience with angler’s during dinner
conversation.
Want a memorable fly fishing
experience? Fishing with “The Trout” and lodging at
River Haven Lodge could very well
be your best ever !
